partners in innovation
Dear Friends,

Happy spring! There's a lot abuzz here at PCDworks as we're working on some pretty exciting projects!

The economy is still top of mind and in this month's column, Mike shares some insight into what businesses should be doing  to weather the current storm.

Also in this issue, read about what's going on in our biology labs and a new technology that caught our eye in the Technology Forum.

Thanks for letting us into your lives each month and for passing along our newsletter to colleagues and friends you think would enjoy reading along as well!

mikeThe Time to Innovate is Now

Mike Profile By now, we all know we are in a recession, a recession which may well be the worst downturn in the past half century. We could debate for hours about how we got here, but the more important questions are: Who will still be here  when we emerge? And what are industry leaders doing right this very minute to ensure their success?

Despite the economy, or perhaps because of it, we must anticipate that our
competition is working right now on ways to take away our share of the market and put us out of business. What is the proper response to this downturn? Is it time to lay everyone off, shepherd the cash until the worst is over, and then cautiously start again? Or is this the perfect time to prepare to crush the competition?

bacteriaBuilding Custom Bugs, Right Down the Hall!

growing bacteriaBy now, you know that PCDworks crosses a broad range of products and industries, but we also specialize in a few key areas - including the development of medical and biology-based products. Recently, we expanded the capabilities of our biological laboratory and greatly enhanced the types of medical and biological product development activities we can perform in-house.

Pay us a visit and you'll see that our biology lab is now well stocked with incubators, cryogenic freezers, centrifuges, hoods and sampling equipment.  And there are some really interesting stuff going on in those rooms.

We are using this equipment to develop custom bacteria for wastewater and biofuel processing, and examine the biological implications of new product designs.  The possibilities are endless as we perform a broad range of biological and medical development testing activities.  Learn more about our science capabilities on our website.

labTechnology Forum: Laboratory in a Cell Phone

cell phone labHere's a cool new development that caught our attention this month. This device, called the LUCAS, uses inexpensive, off-the-shelf parts to turn a conventional cell phone into a functional sampling laboratory!

The device offers the user capabilities to read and analyze bodily fluid. The small size, rapid response time, low cost, and simple design make it beneficial for third world and first world applications alike.  Microfluidics, watch out!

Send us your favorite new technology and we'll talk about it in this forum.
